Sociology in Global Perspective

The chart visually presents data on the population size, energy use and carbon dioxide emissions in Low, Middle and High income countries.

From the book: chapter 6, p. 6

"Carbon dioxide emissions vary widely across countries. There is less pollution in affluent countries for each unit of energy consumed, but since people in those countries consume far more units, their total environmental impact on the planet is a great deal higher than in less wealthy countries.

By the middle of the twenty-first century, energy consumption in developing countries is forecast to outstrip that in industrial countries because of the increasingly larger population size in poorer countries, even though per capita consumption will remain much lower."
