Sociology in Global Perspective

Per-capita Energy Consumption chart visually presents sticking differences in energy consumption in four countries.

From the textbook: chapter 6, p. 4

"Energy consumption varies greatly from country to country. The highest rate of energy consumption is in the United States. Americans, who number less than 5 percent of the total, use 23 percent of all energy that is consumed each year. The average person in North America consumes more than 400 times as much as a person in Ethiopia. Rich European and Asian countries use less in total resources per person than the United States, but nevertheless their overall consumption greatly exceeds that of the world's less affluent nations."
